The electrocardiogram, also known as an EKG or ECG, is a technique used to record cardiac electrical impulses. This test causes no discomfort to the patient and is often used for diagnosing heart disorders such as coronary heart disease, pericarditis (inflammation of the membrane around the heart), cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease), and various arrhythmias and conductions problems of the heart’s electrical system.

What to Expect: Upon arriving at the office, you will change into a gown, disrobing from the waist up. Small metal contacts (electrodes) are placed on the skin of the patient on the chest, wrists, and ankles, which are also connected to a recording machine. The patient will be asked to remain still while the machine displays and records the electrical activity of the heart. This test is painless and quick. Testing takes approximately 5 minutes.

Preparation: There is no special preparation required; however body lotions should not be worn.
